Can I live with 1500 RMB per month in Shanghai, China?

I'm gonna do my internship in that city with the Wison Engineering Co., Ltd, they will pay the lodging and they also have canteen facilities available. I have to pay the roundtrip ticket and the energy fee. I want to know if this payment is enough for this town and if I can travel to another cities in China or buy hi-tech stuff as iPod, laptops... with this salary.|||1500 RMB (yuan) equals roughly US$220. That is a very small amount of money to live anywhere, even with your housing provided for.

Shanghai is an expensive city. With a budget of 1500 yuan per month you will be eating noodles and rarely going out. You will have no funds left over after basic necessities. You certainly can't pay for your plane ticket out of this "salary" or any major purchases like a laptop.

I live in a middle-class Shanghai neighborhood and spend about 15,000 yuan per month. My expenses are lower here than back in America, but even that is showing signs of change.|||You *can* live on that amount of money, but you won't be able to do much, you'll be poor.

Like someone else said - that's about $220. Electronics are the same amount as they are in the US, actually usually more. Taking a train to another city is a few hundred RMB each way, plus hotel. You will want to go to restaurants and out on the town, that adds up too.

I live in a much cheaper city in China, and I wouldn't want to live on this amount.|||Consulate General of Pakistan Shanghai

At the very minimum, expect to pay 1000 RMB in rent per month (which is what some of my local coworkers pay for an apartment in Pudong with concrete floors, no heat, and an open kitchen across the hall from the entrance to their place). I share a much more Westerner-friendly apartment with a roommate, but our rent is 4600 RMB a month, and maybe an average of 300 RMB monthly in utilities. That said, most interns here are paid very little and your wage is already on par with what locals earn as non-interns.

You will definitely NOT be able to live comfortably, travel or go shopping on 1500 RMB/month. If you expect a Western-standard apartment (i.e. private kitchen and Western bathrooms) and to go out on weekends, you'll need to supplement your income.|||Hi there,

Frankly... I don't think 1500 will be enough to survive in Shanghai. I mean if you really really know how to save money (ex. Cook Everyday (plus save on your grocery shopping / Use less water, electricity/ and etc.) then it could be possible (it should cover the basic living cost).....

HOWEVER, when speaking of traveling to other cities and doing other fancy stuff like that with that money... Unfortunately.. it is impossible. (You might be able to get an ipod after saving your allowance for at least half a year or so.)

Don't worry about getting your electronic items there.... There are plenty of other places (countries, cities, or even airports worldwide) where you could get them at a better price.

- I would never buy a MACBOOK PRO in China cuz it's TOO PRICEY. =(|||It's a very very very low salary in Shanghai. I don't think you can live a live off the fat of the land. Shanghai is the most expensive city in China and one of the most expensive cities in Asia.|||RMB1500 no way to buy hightech stuff. shanghai economy is climbing up quick. things getting much expensive then b4. 1500 can only provide ur basic spending. travelling to other cities, yes u can but in a low budget. local train's tix not v expensive to nearby cities but maybe not upto ur standard. dirt, messy....

n food, restaurants in shanghai r expensive now too. can compare w HK nearly.

my uncle (bro of my mother) is a shanghainese....he lives his whole life there. now that he has retired. he got RMB6-7000 monthly.... stil living in low level there.|||1,500 is okay for smaller cities. but shanghai? definitely not.

average price for laptops is 6,000 - 7,000 RMB.|||haa no way your making maybe 750$ hahaha acculy a little less
