i plan to go to Hongkong for a few days and cross to the mainland by train. they say its hard to exchange US$ for RMB in China.
Thanks...|||Yes, you can. $1.00 USD Gets $7.10 RMB (China Yuan). It doesn't really matter if you exchange it in Hong Kong or China. When I was in HK, the hotels would accept RMB when I ran out of HK$ because they are both worth the same, roughly. It is probably best to change it at the HK airport or bank just to save yourself some trouble. Depending on where you go in China, your chances are better if it's a big city. Another thing I noticed is that the way they do business in China pretty much sucks. They might make you wait a long time or even try to rip you off, so be careful.|||The exchange rate in HK airport is VERY VERY bad.
I went in Nov 2006, the rate for USD to HKD was around 1:7.1 in HK airport, but I can exchange for 1:7.7 in bank. (it's about 10% lower than market rate.)
Maybe you need just a little RMB before you arrive mainland China's hotel or a bank.
You can exchange your money in Bank or hotel when you arrive mainland China. The Bank will give you a market rate, the hotel that I lived during my last trip was just a little lower than the bank's rate.|||You can exchange your US$ at the airport, but it usually isn't worth it. I usually wait until I get into the city and go to a bank because they offer better exchange rates than the airport, hotel, or those mom n' pop exchange places. Some banks offer slightly better rates than others (I really mean slightly, so not much difference); you can always ask first. Banks are usually situated near each other, so you can shop the rates around between at least 2 banks within short walking distance.|||It's better to change in China. Firstly, the airport rate is not good, as it was pointed out correctly.
Secondly, the rate is usually US$ %26gt; HK$ %26gt; RMB means, you US$ is first changed to HK$, and then the HK$ to RMB.
In China rates are sort of fixed and it doesn't really matter where you change. Hotels have good rates too and change much faster, in a bank it can take quite some time.
In China be I suggest not to use money changer since there are lots of cheats out there and lots of fake currency too.
